Rain

The sound of rain as nature's breath. This philosophy positions the project as a bridge connecting humanity with the natural world.

Approach

The project explores activating an interactive installation with breath. I connected breathing to natural sounds, recording waves, animals, and wind. In the end, I paired breath with rain, as rain renews the world just as each breath sustains human life.

Concept

As a bridge between human breath and the natural world, this installation activates the sound of rain—a natural breath—that rises and falls with the rhythm of human respiration, its intensity shifting in response to the strength of each breath.

Prototype

To realize this concept, I established a real-time connection using a pressure sensor on the abdomen as the data input source.

The sensor is secured to the user's abdomen via a waistband to detect pressure changes during breathing. Pressure readings indicate the intensity of each breath, and this data is used in real time to control the volume of the rain sound.

Immersive

To immerse users in the connection between breathing and nature, the umbrella serves as a tool to enhance the immersive experience. Hidden within the umbrella is a rain sound speaker. When users stand beneath it, the sound of rain changes in rhythm with their breathing.

User Visualization

After aligning the blue mark on the outer side of the belt with your abdomen and securing the belt, the sensor will be positioned for optimal detection.

Real-time Realizing

The sensor is fixed on the inner side of the belt, transmitting data via an Arduino board to Unity. Light rain, moderate rain, and heavy rain modes are controlled in real-time based on the depth of the user's breathing, dynamically adjusting the rain sound effects.
